Breast Cancer Stages and the survival rates

Like I said earlier, breast cancer is very common among women. This is actually the second most common disease of this nature among American women (skin cancer is the second coming). Statistics show that 1 in every 12 women develops breast cancer during her whole life. Men may also develop this disease, but the statistics are much smaller.

According to the American Cancer Society, if a woman is diagnosed with this disease, there is a 3% chance that it could be fatal, resulting in death. Since 1990, the number of women dying from this disease decreased mainly due to increased awareness and screening. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with the dreaded disease, do not lose hope. There are currently more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

There are several different stages of this type of cancer. The different stages of breast cancer depend on four things; the size of the tumor, the type of the (invasive or non-invasive), regardless of lymph nodes involved, and whether the disease has spread to other areas of the body. Let's take a brief look at the different stages of breast cancer.

The first stage, which is considered as stage 0, type non-invasive breast cancers. At this stage, all of the breast cancer cells remain and will not invade neighboring tissues. Stage 1, on the other hand, describes an invasive breast cancer. Invasive cancer means that the cancer cells break free of the breast and the direction of the adjacent tissues. The first stage, the tumor is less than 2 cm in length and not the lymph nodes are affected.

Stage II, when the disease is divided into 2 categories; IIA and IIB. Both involve invasive cancer stage. An individual diagnosed with Stage IIA breast cancer when the tumor is not found in the breast, but the cancer cells are found in lymph nodes when the tumor in the breast (measuring 2 cm) spread to lymph nodes, or when the tumors in the breast 2-5cm, but not spread to the lymph nodes. Stage IIB diagnosed when 1-5cm between the tumor and has spread to lymph nodes, or if the tumor is greater than 5 cm and has not spread to lymph nodes.

Stage III is divided into subcategories of this disease (IIIA, IIIB and IIIC). IIIA cancers are diagnosed when the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and lumps them together. Stage IIIB are diagnosed when the cancer has spread to the chest wall or skin of the breast. Finally, stage IIIC are diagnosed when the cancer has spread to the chest wall or breast, and spread to the lymph nodes. In the final stage of breast cancer, stave IV occurs when the cancer has spread to other organs of the body.
